Dream of the Nineties Memory Quilt

After moving across the country to begin a new phase of life, Ann Marie opened one of her many packing boxes to find a stack of old clothing. These favorites dated from the 1990’s and represented important aspects of her life–growing up in Michigan, living in New York in her 20s, music, feminism… Commissioning a memory quilt was a way to keep the memories close and visible on a daily basis. The back incorporates shirt pockets that I filled with notes from her old friends.

The shirts were deconstructed and reassembled in an improvisational style, based on the Memory Lane score by Sherri Lynn Wood. This is a good example of how I can make a cohesive quilt when using clothing in a range of unrelated colors. It also shows how dynamic a non-traditional Tshirt quilt can be.

Long rectangular quilt composed of various deconstructed Tshirts in shades of light blue, pink, brown, maroon and red. Graphic themes include music, feminism and New York State and Brooklyn.
